The city in three parts

How Lilongwe is laid out.

City Centre

The planned quarter: government, embassies, banks, the main hotels and the newer shopping. Capital Hill sits at its heart, and most institutional work happens within a few minutes of it.

Old Town

Older, busier and better for markets, everyday shopping and restaurants. Where you go for produce, hardware, and dinner that is not in a hotel.

The residential areas

Numbered areas spread between the two, Area 43 among them. Quiet, walled, green, and where most people on longer assignments actually live.

Practicalities

Worth knowing in the first week.

Money

The Malawi Kwacha is the local currency and cash still matters outside the larger shops. Cards work in supermarkets and hotels but not reliably elsewhere. ATMs in City Centre and Old Town are the dependable ones. Bring some cash for the first day.

Power and water

Interruptions are routine rather than exceptional. Anywhere you stay for more than a few nights should have a generator and water storage. Ask specifically whether the WiFi router has battery backup — many places have power but still lose connectivity.

Getting around

There is no metro or formal bus network worth planning around. Most people use a car and driver, ride-hailing where available, or arrange transport through their accommodation. Distances are short and traffic is light by regional standards.

Time zone

Central Africa Time, UTC+2, with no daylight saving. Level with or an hour ahead of London depending on the season, two behind Dubai, and six or seven ahead of the US East Coast.

Food and shopping

Supermarkets stock most things. The produce markets are excellent and inexpensive. A kitchen changes the economics of a long stay considerably — eating out twice a day for two months gets old faster than it gets expensive.

Weather

Warm and dry from May to October, hot through October and November, and wet from December to March. The rains are heavy but usually brief. The dry season is the comfortable one, and also the busy one.

Nearby

Things worth doing when you are not working.

Lilongwe Wildlife Centre

A sanctuary and rescue centre with walking trails through indigenous woodland, about fifteen minutes away. The easiest good hour in the city.

The markets

Old Town's markets for produce, and the craft stalls for carvings, basketry and chitenje fabric. Go in the morning.

Lake Malawi

Senga Bay is roughly two hours by road, and makes a straightforward weekend. Cape Maclear is further and worth the longer trip if you have three days.
